ORIGIN OF THE BREED
The Cane Corso like the Neapolitan Mastiff's descended from the old world Roman dog
of war Canis PugnaxThe Cane Corso is the smaller of the two what he lacks in size he makes up with speed, curage and
is more agile than his cousin. The cane Corso is known as a coursing dog that is well muscled, and was used for hunting
wild boar, bear, stags and and herding also for personal protection .
When Rome conquered Briton the British war Dogs defeated the Roman dogs on the battlefield. The Romans raved about
this feat and the superiority of the broad mouth dogs of England.Rome imported numbers of the British dogs back to Rome
as gifts.
In 1137 The cane Corso was put to war in Monopoli di sabina near the Roman Kennels , from this period on the breed
was linked to Roman history. In the 1970s the breed was nearly extinct and was brought back from near extinction due to the
pioneering efforts of two great men Count Bonalli and professor ballota.
American introduction to the breed occurred in late
1980s imports were brought into the country by the Sottile family from North New Jersey. Michael Sottile was well
known as a breeder of Rottweilers and Neapolitan Mastiff's Since that time the breed has gained recognition and has
become known nation wide in dog circles just five years ago if you mentioned the name Cane Corso you were asked cane who ?.
Mr sottile set the early standards to the breed along the guide lines of our Italian counterparts.
These standards were soon
to change as the parent club of the ICCF in March of 2000 set down a revised standard and was published by the ICCF there
are other registrations for the breed Rare Breed association, the CCPS , SACC and FIC and ACA
Around march of 2004 the Cane Corso was accepted into
the AKC as foundation stock. And will soon officially be full fledged members our dogs are allowed to participate
in some AKC special events
